Ontario motor vehicle dealers and salespersons should prepare for OMVIC’s new continuing education requirements.

OMVIC’s continuing education requirement applies to registrants renewing on or after July 1, 2026. The requirement can be met by completing REVS, OMVIC’s in-house courses, or the MVDA Key Elements Course delivered through Georgian College, depending on the registrant’s assigned requirement.

What changed?

OMVIC has introduced a continuing education framework for dealers and salespersons. OMVIC’s portal includes an education section where registrants can review their upcoming CPD requirements.

Who should pay attention?

This is important for:

  • registered motor vehicle dealers;
  • registered salespersons;
  • dealership HR teams;
  • general managers;
  • compliance managers; and
  • anyone responsible for licence or registration renewals.

What happens if the requirement is not completed?

OMVIC states that if the education requirement is not completed by the renewal date, the registrant’s registration will expire.

What should dealerships do?

Dealerships should:

  • identify all registered dealers and salespersons;
  • confirm each person’s renewal date;
  • check the OMVIC portal for assigned education requirements;
  • set internal reminders before renewal deadlines;
  • assign responsibility for tracking completion; and
  • update onboarding and compliance checklists.

Employer takeaway

This should be treated as a licensing compliance item. Dealerships should not leave CPD tracking to the last minute, especially for employees whose registration renews on or shortly after July 1, 2026.

HR4 helps dealerships stay organized by centralizing licence and registration tracking, CPD deadline reminders can be set up, onboarding checklists, and manager notifications. With key dates and employee records in one platform, HR4 helps reduce last-minute renewal issues and supports consistent, compliance-ready processes.
